Ian was born in Oxford, England, but was raised in Toronto, Canada. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Toronto and followed this by earning a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Ottawa.
Ian currently serves as the Chairman of the Board at Vancouver-based Goldcorp, an international gold company that produced 3.46 million ounces of gold in 2015 and employs approximately 18,000 people around the world. Before assuming the role of Chairman, Ian served as the company’s President and Chief Executive Officer. He is a well-regarded executive in the Canadian mining space.

During his more than thirty years in the mining sector, Ian has founded and/or led a number of resource companies, including TVX Gold, Wheaton River, Silver Wheaton, Terrane Minerals and Uranium One. Ian’s leadership and business sense led these companies to have a combined market capitalization of more than $50 billion during their peak.
In 2015, Ian Telfer was inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame. This year, he will be inducted into the Business Laureates of British Columbia (BLBC) Hall of Fame for his business accomplishments and philanthropic efforts.
Outside the business world, Ian is well-known for his charitable contributions. In 2007, Ian gave a multi-million dollar donation to the business school at the University of Ottawa, now named the Telfer School of Management. Ian’s $25 million dollar gift to the school was at the time the largest individual donation of its kind in Canadian history and is a testimony to Ian’s deep-seated philanthropic spirit. In 2015, Ian followed up this donation with another $2 million gift to the Telfer School of Management.
Ian is a long-time supporter and benefactor of the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation. In conjunction with Goldcorp, Ian regularly sponsors charity events and foundation initiatives. This past May, Ian and Goldcorp recently presented the hospital’s 16th annual Lions Gate Hospital Gala which raised over $1.3 million (net). Goldcorp was also the presenting sponsor in 2015, when the gala raised more than $1 million (net) for the foundation.
Ian has also sponsored and supported The Special Olympics, The Vancouver Aquarium and the Simon Fraser Goldcorp Centre for the Arts.
An avid traveler, Ian has visited more than 100 countries around the globe.
