Health Care Hero – Dr. Ardashes Avanessian

April 21, 2017

We are very excited to congratulate the latest Health Care Hero, Dr. Ardashes Avanessian, an oncologist at Lions Gate Hospital. Congratulations Dr. Avanessian!

After a North Shore resident made a donation to the Foundation specifically naming Dr. Avanessian as their Health Care Hero, we were pleased to recognize him for his outstanding level of care and service to our community. Dr. Avanessian was presented with a Health Care Hero pin and recognition letter.

We asked him some questions about his career and here’s what he had to say:

I chose to become an oncologist, as it is a profession which helps to improve the patient’s quality and quantity of life. In this practice, you are not only are a physician but also a counselor, supporter, and advocate for both them and their family members and friends and that gives you a significant job satisfaction.
I worked for BC Cancer agency in Kamloops for 8 years before joining LGH oncology team in July 2013, and I feel blessed to work with such a caring and compassionate team.

The practice of oncology demands a lot of time in close contact with patient or family anxiety, distress, and premature death. As we take life’s journey alongside our cancer patients and their respective families, we learn a lot from them and one of the most important lessons is that as much we tend to think that we are in control and can plan every facet of our lives, life is constantly changing, so we should have a willingness to embrace, ambiguity and uncertainty.

Each one of my patients could teach me something new and remind me that that true fullness of life is achieved only in the process of serving others, not just oneself. I also try to reflect and remember that how good things really are and be grateful rather than focusing on negatives.

At LGH chemotherapy clinic, patients get to know each member of the team involved in their care; doctors, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, nutritionists, cleaners… in one place and that gives them a feeling of belonging to a family and provides them a sense security, and that’s what a community clinic is all about.

There are so many things to talk about, but I think this brief summary should suffice for my take on oncology practice.
