North Shore Hospice & Palliative Project

Partners in Palliative & Hospice Care

 Our vision is for Lions Gate Hospital Foundation (LGHF) and North Shore Hospice Society (NSHS) to partner their shared passions, efforts, administrative strengths, donor bases and fundraising expertise to support the ongoing expansion and enhancement of palliative and hospice services for the North Shore and region.

By working together as a team, and with the support of Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH-Coastal), the proposed North Shore Hospice & Palliative Project (comprising members of both LGHF and NSHS) will work to raise public awareness as well as the funds needed to ensure every palliative/hospice care patient in our community lives a full and supported life, with dignity and comfort.

“If we really get this right, over the coming years we won’t have a dichotomy between palliative care, hospice care, end-of-life care and normal care. It’ll be part of the same continuum. It will be what you need at the end of life.” –Dr. Peter Edmunds, Co-senior Medical Director,VCH-Coastal, Regional Medical Director, Home, Community and Palliative Care

Our Public Health Partners

 Vancouver Coastal Health is the definitive public health-care system provider of palliative and end-of-life care and services for citizens living throughout the North Shore and region. Lions Gate Hospital Foundation and North Shore Hospice Society have provided fundraising support for these initiatives.

  • Lions Gate Hospital Foundation (LGHF) is dedicated to raising the funds needed – beyond what is made possible through government funding – to ensure families throughout the North Shore and VCH region have access to the best available medical equipment and services at Lions Gate Hospital and at publicly funded health-care facilities in the region. The Foundation supports initiatives that enhance “whole-life” care, from maternity to palliative and hospice care.
  • North Shore Hospice Society (NSHS) led the development of North Shore Hospice, and continues to play a major leadership role in raising awareness and funds for this vital community health-care resource. It is also a leader in the funding of innovative programs that meet the broader but equally important non-medical needs of palliative care patients and their families, including the Every Day Counts Program, as well as public education and advocacy.
  • Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH-Coastal) is the overarching organization that serves as the bridge between the North Shore/region and the provincial government. VCH-Coastal recognizes the importance of quality and choice in palliative and hospice care for the region. It has developed a vision that includes innovative services and supports requiring additional funding. VCH-Coastal is looking to LGHF and NSHS to work together to fundraise in support of these services and enhancements.

Shared Beliefs

Looking to the future of health care for our community, Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, North Shore Hospice Society and Vancouver Coastal Health are united in their beliefs that:

  • End-of-life care is a vital component of a high quality public health-care system.
  • Our community wants access and choice in end-of-life care and resources.
  • To deliver the highest quality palliative and hospice care we need additional funding, not all of which can be provided by government.
  • End-of-life care must continue to grow and innovate in addressing the physical, mental, emotional, social and practical needs of palliative patients and their families.

In order to deliver the highest quality end-of-life care for patients throughout the North Shore and region, LGHF and NSHS feel they must create a new framework for partnership and cooperation to both raise awareness and funds. This is the impetus behind the new partnership.

Vision for the Future

Lions Gate Hospital, North Shore Hospice and Vancouver Coastal Health’s shared vision for the care of palliative/hospice patients includes:

  • To connect with patients with life-limiting illness as soon as possible, and to increase support and choice of care for them in their last years and days of life;
  • To help patients and their families through the palliative/hospice process, so that they are choosing beneficial treatments;
  • To keep patients with life-limiting illnesses as healthy and comfortable as possible to reduce their time in hospital;
  • To lead ongoing innovation in the provision of end-of-life care for patients and families;
  • To create an all-encompassing continuum of care that embraces patients and their families on every step of their shared journey.

Empowered Through Partnership

Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, North Shore Hospice and Vancouver Coastal Health enjoy a long history of cooperation (including the creation of North Shore Hospice) and have already established a very robust foundation of palliative/hospice programs and services. To take these programs and services to the next level, LGHF and NSHS have decided to cease fundraising independently in favour of becoming true partners under a single brand – North Shore Hospice/Palliative Care Project.

  • By working together, LGHF and NSHS are in a very strong position to effectively raise awareness and advocate for end-of-life services.
  • By pooling their extensive expertise, administrative resources and shared donor base, they are perfectly positioned to maximize their fundraising efforts to help build capacity and support the best-possible palliative and hospice care for our community.
  • Uniting under a single brand will help reduce confusion in the community about palliative services and providers, and reaffirm LGHF and NSHS collectively as the leading public health system fundraisers for end-of-life care on the North Shore.

The Importance of Palliative/Hospice Care

Over the years, there has been growing recognition within the North Shore and broader VCH-Coastal communities that in the acute health-care system, the principal focus of care is diagnosis, treatment and discharge. However, this acute model of care does not meet the needs of patients living with life-limiting illness.

The goal of the new partnership is to consolidate the many excellent programs and services already in place, as well as to expand on these to ensure patients with life-limiting illness have quick access to a well-defined continuum of care that meets their unique needs and allows them to live a comfortable and fulfilled life to life’s end.

Better Together – The Power of Partnership

By working together under the umbrella of the North Shore Hospice & Palliative Project, Lions Gate Hospital Foundation and North Shore Hospice Society will be in a much stronger position to achieve their shared objectives. Working as a team:

  • Lions Gate Hospital Foundation and North Shore Hospice Society will present “a united front in a common cause,” eliminating unnecessary confusion among donors, competition for donor dollars and costly duplication of effort.
  • Each partner organization will be able to contribute its greatest strengths to the team effort to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness in generating public awareness and in raising funds.
  • Allows each partner organization to consider its individual end-of-life services as an integral part of a much larger and more comprehensive palliative and hospice care program.
  • Allows the partners to work together to innovate in palliative and hospice care, and to develop the best and most cost-effective ways to implement those innovations to meet patient needs.
  • Allows the partners to identify and find ways to expand services for family, friends and the community as a whole.

This partnership represents the natural evolution of palliative/hospice care as an integral part of the health-care continuum – bringing “whole-life” health care full circle. This partnership is the next step in health-care innovation for the North Shore and region, coming quickly on the heels of the recent creation of the HOpe Centre and the Youth Concurrent Disorders Clinic.

All donations to the North Shore Hospice & Palliative Project will be accepted and managed under the auspices of Lions Gate Hospital Foundation on behalf of both partner organizations. When you give to the North Shore Hospice & Palliative Project, you help support quality end-of-life care for everyone in our community.

Together, we can continue to make a difference.
