NS Health Care Awards for Outstanding Achievement

North Shore honours three health care professionals:
The North Shore Health Care Awards for Outstanding Achievement were held on January 17, 2008 at Lions Gate Hospital. The event honours staff and physicians who go "above and beyond" to achieve outstanding results in health care.

The awards were established thanks to the generous support of the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation. Staff and physicians on the North Shore were invited to nominate their coworkers. Congratulations to the winners!

Leadership - April Watson
April is the Rehab Program Team Leader in Community Psychiatric Services. Three years ago, she spearheaded a partnership with what is now Achieve, a Ministry-funded employment service for people with disabilities. As a result, a number of North Shore clients have found employment. The partnership also led to a Masters' research project that is exploring the factors affecting employability of people with mental illness. April encourage and supports the growth and development of team members, leading to new programs and initiatives, such as WRAP and the Sea to Sky Peer Support Program. Last summer, she collaborated with practitioners in Squamish and Sechelt to offer a three-day camp for clients at Evans Lake. She also coordinated a garden party to celebrate four clients who had demonstrated the courage to overcome recover from mental illness and its negative stigma.

Clinical Practice - Dr. Gary Andolfatto
Dr. Gary Andolfatto has contributed significantly to the practice of emergency medicine. His special interest is in patient sedation for painful emergency department procedures. In his role as Research Director, he has published an important study in the esteemed Annals of Emergency Medicine regarding the use of a new sedation medication, Ketofol. Gary's study and his ongoing research have established him as an authority on its use and his article is frequently quoted in emergency medicine literature and at emergency medicine conferences. Gary has been involved in the Emergency Medicine Academic Working Group, with the goal of establishing a Department of Emergency Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC. He is also a peer reviewer for the Canadian Journal of Emergency Medicine and was the resident and student coordinator for the LGH Emergency department.

Workplace Inspiration- Shirley Cornthwaite
A dozen individuals from new grads to physicians wrote of Shirley's contributions and impact. Here are a few excerpts:
  • Shirley has been a cornerstone for nursing in the surgical program at LGH. Her calm approach, wicked humour and keen intelligence have helped ease countless nurses into the chaotic profession that is nursing. Her steadying hand and experience have proven crucial in many emergencies. But what makes Shirley truly remarkable is that after more than 30 years, she still has her spark and her caring for patients is evident in every interaction.
  • We wish to nominate Shirley as a true leader in nursing for her passion for teaching and supporting new graduate nurses. She is always approachable, supportive and is a knowledgeable resource for new hires. She creates a warm, professional and welcoming environment where young nurses want to work.
  • In an area of nursing where staff turnover is high, Shirley is an example of longevity that many RNs copy. She fearlessly promotes frank and open communication with all disciplines, including physicians. Her influence has been felt by thousands.
