| A place in between a home and a hospital
for the final chapter of life
|
The North Shore Hospice is a community partnership of Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, Family Services of the North Shore, Lions Gate Hospice Society, and Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH). The Hospice will be centrally located adjacent to the Hospital campus. VCH has provided the land (valued at $2.6 million) to build the Hospice and will own and manage the facility. The Hospice will be part of VCH's continuum of care and will provide quality, end-of-life care in a home-like setting to stable, terminally ill individuals.
Not everyone wants to die in the clinical setting of a hospital and not everyone can care for their dying loved ones at home. A hospice is a place in between those options, offering a home-like environment, emotional, spiritual and care supports. It operates on a care philosophy that recognizes death as a natural process, emphasizes palliative rather than curative treatment, and focuses on quality of life. It is care where, in a home-like setting, the dying are comforted and professional care is provided with dignity.
To turn the dream of a freestanding Hospice on the North Shore into a reality, all of the partners committed to raising $7.7 million, which was achieved and surpassed on April 24, 2008. Donations received above and beyond the $7.7-million goal will be put toward fulfilling a 'wish list' of additional items for the Hospice to make it a truly exceptional facility for patients and their families.
