"The community's response has been tremendous," said Ken Rekrutiak, campaign chair.  "Starting with Jim Pattison's challenge grant, the generosity of individuals and organizations throughout the community has far-exceeded our expectations. The ER touches everyone in our community and clearly there is great enthusiasm to see our ER expanded and improved to better accommodate the needs of our community," he said.

To date, more than 7,500 individuals and organizations have participated in the campaign, including almost 1,200 first-time donors. The campaign represents the largest in the Foundation's history.

Lions Gate Hospital Foundation and Vancouver Coastal Health have partnered together to renovate and expand the Emergency Department at Lions Gate Hospital. The new Emergency Department will enhance patient care and better meet the needs of the community.

The new Emergency Department will double in size to 2400 metres squared or 25,800 square feet, and will provide more than 50 treatment spaces. Expansion plans include:

  • improving and expanding the triage station to speed up assessments and admission to the Emergency Department
  • a more comfortable waiting room
  • a separate area for patients requiring mental health assessment
  • a decontamination room
  • a separate ambulance entrance
  • separate Pediatric exam rooms

To allow the Emergency Department work to be undertaken, some related projects are required to be completed. The first phase of the project was the relocation of the Ambulance Station completed in mid-December, 2005.

Currently, design work for the project is advancing, and the project team is continuing dialogue with Emergency Department staff to reconfirm the clinical program. Recent submissions to the City of North Vancouver have resulted in preliminary approval from the City.

Construction of the Emergency Department will begin in the late fall 2006 and will be implemented through a multi-phase construction process allowing the Emergency Department to continue caring for patients. Project completion is scheduled for the end of 2007.

Lions Gate Hospital's Emergency Department will be one of the first in the Lower Mainland to replace their current whiteboard (used to track patients) with an electronic tracking board through the EDIS Project. This project is being planned and implemented as part of the Lions Gate Hospital Emergency Department Renovation Project.
