| Intervening to provide a higher quality of life |
Lives are significantly improved in Lions Gate Hospital Foundation’s angiography room, but new equipment is needed for the radiologists to keep up with both the demand for their services and the leading-edge procedures that could be performed with better equipment. That is why Lions Gate Hospital Foundation is raising $3.5 million toward much needed angiography and interventional radiology equipment, which will replace aging technology.
These interventional procedures can alleviate traumatic problems, enhance patient quality of life and are generally less invasive than surgery. They are often performed on patients who may not tolerate surgery, and in most cases the recovery time for patients is reduced.
The list of who will benefit from this new equipment is extensive. Some of the procedures it will be used for include:
Angiographies; |
Balloon angioplasties and stent procedures to open narrow or blocked blood vessels; |
Delivery of chemotherapy directly to a tumour through its blood supply; |
Placement of tubes into different parts of the body to drain fluids |
Thrombolysis, which is a treatment to dissolve blood clots |
Biopsies; |
Blocking abnormal artery vessels; |
Reducing uterine fibroids by blocking the blood supply; and |
aortic aneurysms with fast recovery times is a future consideration. |
