Hospice Campaign
A place in between a home and a hospital for the final chapter of life
The much-anticipated first free-standing Hospice on the North Shore officially opened to patient care on November 1, 2010. To celebrate, a community celebration and open house took place on Saturday, October 23, and was toured by over 700 people.
The North Shore Hospice was a community partnership between Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, Family Services of the North Shore, Lions Gate Hospice Society, and Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).
The community, through Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, contributed more than $8.5 million, which exceeded the original fundraising target of $7.7 million. “The campaign to build a new Hospice for the North Shore was launched in June 2007,” says LGH Foundation President Judy Savage. “Since that day, more than 5,000 individuals participated in the campaign; it really proved the tremendous dedication from our community to make this Hospice a reality.”
The Hospice is located one block east of the hospital at 319 East 14th Street, on land provided by VCH, valued at $2.6 million. VCH owns and will manage the facility, which is part of its continuum of care to provide quality, end-of-life care to stable, terminally ill individuals, while allowing them and their loved ones to spend time in a quiet, home-like setting, instead of a hospital environment. The Hospice has been built using LEED (Leadership in Energy and certified Environmental Design) standards and features 15 spacious and comfortable private rooms, each with a private garden, and shared gathering areas including a living room, kitchen, and quiet spaces, such as the ‘healing garden’.
