"The community's response has been tremendous," said Ken Rekrutiak, campaign chair.  "Starting with Jim Pattison's challenge grant, the generosity of individuals and organizations throughout the community far-exceeded our expectations. The ER touches everyone in our community and clearly there is great enthusiasm to see our ER expanded and improved to better accommodate the needs of our community," he said.

More than 7,500 individuals and organizations participated in the campaign, including almost 1,200 first-time donors. The campaign represents the largest in the Foundation's history to date.

Lions Gate Hospital Foundation and Vancouver Coastal Health partnered together to renovate and expand the Emergency Department at Lions Gate Hospital.

The new Emergency Department which was completed in May, 2009 has doubled in size to 2400 metres squared or 25,800 square feet, and features more than 50 treatment spaces. In addition, the new Emergency Department features:

  • more comfortable waiting rooms
  • a separate area for patients requiring mental health assessment
  • a decontamination room
  • a separate ambulance entrance
  • separate Pediatric exam rooms

Construction of the Emergency Department commenced in the fall 2006 and was completed in May 2009.

Lions Gate Hospital's Emergency Department is one of the first in the Lower Mainland to replace its current whiteboard (used to track patients) with an electronic tracking board through the EDIS Project.
